KARACHI: Ahmed Shahzad made a strong statement to the national selectors on Sunday by scoring his maiden double century to power Habib Bank into commanding position against Faisalabad in the Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship Division One match.

Ahmed, who turns 19 on Nov 23, struck an unbeaten 207 as Habib Bank reached 352-1 in reply to Faisalabad’s first-innings score of 172 on the second day of the four-day fixture at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha.

Former Test batsman Saleem Elahi played second fiddle to the young right-handed opener in the unbroken second-wicket partnership, which is already worth 307, with 110 (12 fours and two sixes). Ahmed, who played four One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals without much success last year, has so far adorned his 315-ball knock with 24 fours and three sixes.

Despite career-best figures of 6-69 by 20-year-old left-arm pacer Sadaf Hussain, Rawalpindi conceded a lead of 120 on the first innings to ZTBL who made 235 in the match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. First-class debutant Shoaib Nasir was batting on 56 as Rawalpindi reached 117-4 in the second innings.

Former Pakistan Under-19 captain Imad Wasim put Islamabad on top against National Bank by stroking 133 – the left-handed all-rounder’s maiden first-class ton – as the regional side posted 352 in their first innings at the Diamond Club Ground. The bankers found the going tough as they went to stumps at 201-5 in reply.

Opener Babar Ali hit 114 (140 balls, 17 fours and one six) to lead Multan to 226-5 after SNGPL made 358 in their first innings at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

Wapda, meanwhile, put themselves on course for an early win at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot by reaching 339-5 in response to the hosts’ paltry total of 126 with Ali Azmat (112 with 14 fours) and wicket-keeper Ahmed Said (64) putting on 159 in the unfinished sixth-wicket stand. Opener Adil Nisar contributed 93.

Upcoming wicket-keeper/batsman Bismillah Khan celebrated his promotion as an opener with a maiden first-class century to help Quetta reach 209-2 in reply to hosts Hyderabad’s first-innings tally of 361 in the Division Two tie at the Niaz Stadium. The 20-year-old Bismillah is still at the crease with 125, a 177-ball innings containing 13 fours and three sixes.

State Bank lost three early wickets before fighting back to make 119-3 after Lahore Ravi were dismissed for 268 at the LCCA Ground in Lahore.

PTV were heading towards defeat on their maiden first-class appearance after closing at 133-5 in the second innings after hosts Abbottabad had taken a handy lead of 69 runs.

Lahore Shalimar were 213-4 in reply to Peshawar’s 272 at the Sports Complex in Mardan.
