Other than that there wasn't a lot to cheer about for Lions fans. The Lions played another 50 minutes of quality football, actually leading the Patriots, 17-10, at halftime. Somebody please tell coach Jim Schwartz and his staff that a game is 60 minutes long.
The Lions eventually lost, 45-24, to New England, again cementing themselves as a national joke and giving detractors one more reason to want to pull the annual Turkey Day game from the Motor City.
Schwartz has said that Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick is a big reason Schwartz is the coach that he is, but in what alternate dimension does any of Schwartz’s coaching reflect Belichick’s?
The Lions actually kept up for half of the game, but once halftime adjustments were made and the Patriots started throwing deep — once the Lions game plan was unmasked, blammo, 35 points for the Patriots in the second half, 7 for the Lions.
With a chance to redeem themselves for a year of missed opportunities, the Lions floundered and sputtered all over the field. With one playoff win in the last 50 years, you would think the NFL would spot the Lions a few points every game just to make things fair.
Once again Lions fans must relegate themselves to hearing commissioner Roger Goodell say, “and the first pick in this year’s NFL draft goes to the Detroit Lions.” Sooner or later even Kid Rock will probably start wearing another team’s cap.
What a way to be a fan around here.
