Scientists, kabuki actor win Kyoto prize

TOKYO (AP) - Rashid Sunyaev has been awarded Japan's annual Kyoto Prize, along with an American materials expert and a Japanese kabuki actor.

Sunyaev, 68, a citizen of Russia and Germany, won in the basic sciences category for his contributions to high-energy astronomy.

Winning the advanced technology prize was John W. Cahn, of the United States, for his work on materials science and alloys. Cahn, 83, is an emeritus fellow at the U.S. National Institute of Standards Technology and affiliate professor at the University of Washington.

Japan's Tamasaburo Bando V won the arts and philosophy prize. Bando, 61, is a Kabuki actor specializing in female roles.

The Kyoto Prize is Japan's highest private award for global achievement. The awards will be presented in November.
