Winning return for Serena

Serena Williams marked her eagerly-anticipated return to the WTA Tour with a three-set victory over Tsvetana Pironkova at Eastbourne.

The 29-year-old American, who has not played since winning her fourth singles title at Wimbledon last year due to injury and health problems, looked nervy and sluggish before settling down to win 1-6 6-3 6-4 and move into the second round.

Despite the scrappy nature of her victory, Serena was relived to come through against the player who eliminated sister Venus at the All England Club last year.

"She is an unbelievable player she beat Venus at Wimbledon last year and when I saw the draw I thought Oh my God," said Williams afterwards.

"I'm a little rusty but I enjoy being back on the grass. I will go inside now and see how I feel."
